The name of my study program “Kulturwissenschaften und ästhetische Praxis” does not translate very well into English and it’s not very descriptive either. In the English speaking world, the academic field of cultural studies focuses heavily on politics, while here in Germany, cultural studies are mainly about the analysis of cultural production in terms of art and media with politics being only one thread of many in the framework. It is a degree course that focuses on both theory and practice of creation, politics and management of art and (pop) culture. It is a transdisciplinary degree that gives you the ability to observe, analyse, and design cultural and artistic processes and prepares you to manage artists, work at museums or theatres, or organise events.
For reference, here are a few classes that I took:
– Introduction to film theory

– Business fundamentals of cultural work
– Transmedia storytelling
